Test 'Spots Blood Disease Danger'
UK experts say they have found a way of predicting which thalassaemia patients are going to develop heart failure.
The technique uses a magnetic resonance scanner to measure the level of iron in the heart, which builds to life-threatening levels in some patients.
The study, published in the journal Circulation, suggests the technique leads to a 71% reduction in deaths.
Thalassaemia is an inherited disorder of the blood system which causes a lack of haemoglobin.
A government spokesman said it could significantly help in the management of people with thalassaemia.
The teams at the Royal Brompton Hospital and Imperial College tried the technique on 652 patients over seven years.

Dylan Thomas
Dylan Thomas, born October 27th, 1914, was a Welsh poet and prose writer. He left school at the age of 16 to work as a prose writer. He became famous in 1939 with his work, The Map of Love. Rich with metaphoric language and emotional intensity, it was representative of all of his future work.
In Fern Hill, he adopted a bardic and oracular voice. In Country Sleep, one of his most famous poems can be found, Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night. Thomas’ prose includes Portrait of an Artist as a Young Dog, Under Milk Wood, and A Child’s Christmas in Wales.
His sonorous recitations contributed greatly to his fame. However, debt and heavy drinking began taking their toll in the late 1930’s, and he died of an alcohol overdose while on tour on November 9th, 1953.

One day, they were going to have an exam. Short Necmi hid in the furnace so they could copy. Suddenly the principal came to the class. He asked “What are you doing? Where is Short Necmi?” The students said, “He is ill.” The principal asked, “Is the classroom cold?” The students said “No!” The principal looked in the furnace and saw Short Necmi. He got angry and pulled his ear.

A man and a woman were having dinner in a fine restaurant. Their waitress, taking an order at a table nearby, noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table. The woman looked unconcerned.
The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of site. Still the woman across from him seemed unconcerned.
After the waitress finished taking an order, she came over to the table and said, “Pardon me. I think your husband has slid under the table.”
The woman looked up and replied, “No, he didn’t. He just walked in the door.”
