Diets Here, Diets Everywhere
Just about everyone reckons they are fat. It is always time for a diet. How
many different diets are there? At least 50,000. Do any of them work? It's
highly debatable. Some say you can eat this. Other's say you can't. Most
encourage you to avoid desserts. Others say eat as much chocolate as
you want. It's obvious if they agreed with the books of other dieticians then
they wouldn't sell any of their own.
It is important for a majority to watch what they eat. A heart attack is
right around the corner for many. Scientists agree that a diet rich in saturated
fats will enhance your chances of meeting your maker a bit sooner than
you would prefer. However, there are several statistics which dispute this.
- the Japanese consume very little fat, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British, Americans and Australians.
- Mexicans eat a lot of fat, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British, Americans and Australians.
- the Japanese drink very little red wine, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British, Americans and Australians.
- the Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British, Americans and Australians
- Germans eat a lot of sausage and bacon and drink a lot of beer, and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British, Americans and Australians.
What conclusions can you derive from this information? It is all very bewildering. There is only one logical summary. Eat and drink whatever you want. Speaking English can be fatal! |

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his English class one day. "In English," he said, "A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."
A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."

NEW JOB
I had decided to become an auditor in a company which works in the international area. First, I searched on the internet about the companies and then I realized that only four companies work for my vision. The companies are called the Big Four; Pricewaterhousecoopers, KPMG, Ernst and Deloittes. Every year in May, the companies start job interviews with newly graduated people. The best one is PWC in terms of the results of the last five year’s revenues. After a hard application process, my phone was ringing for job interviews. I want to tell you about my PWC interview. The interview was at a hotel which has a reputation in Istanbul and was a group interview with 10 newly graduated people. There were three managers from different departments. An auditing and assurance firm’s activities are auditing, accounting and bookkeeping, tax services and management consultation. I had applied for the auditing activity that observes and states financial statements – balance sheets and statements of income. All my education was auditing and fraud determination; thus I was conscious about what I wanted. According to me, this took me a step away.
When we entered the saloon and sat on the seat, we started to introduce ourselves. My opponents’ universities were better than mine in the range of application after the university exam. But my education was better and I believed in myself. I expressed my background, talents which an auditor must have. The committee took notes while we were speaking. Then they brought some post cards on different forms they had. We chose one post card, and then everyone talked about his post card. There was a serious face on my post card and I illustrated the form with the auditor’s talents like independence and dependence on rules.
In the second part of the review, we had a case; there was a new firm in human resources consulting and we discussed the firm’s organization in30 minutes. During the discussion, the committee took notes. I think they looked for analytical thinking and team working with this case. At the end of the time, the committee asked the group to summarize the production of the case and there was a silence in the saloon and I wanted to present the case. After a brilliant presentation, I believed that I was close to the job. At the end of the day, the committee told us to summarize the day in English and they finished the discussion. They said only two people would continue onto the elimination process. After a week, my phone rang and the human resources director invited me for a second discussion. I took notes about the place and the partner’s name as the second discussion was with a partner of the firm. In the second discussion we talked about my education and career plans in Turkish and in English, and then they gave me a paper which contained the sentence “Why would you like to work for PWC, could you please write at least 100 words.” After a long process, I took the job.
