Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.

Kittens For Sale

A farmer had some kittens he needed to sell after his long trip abroad. He painted a sign advertising the babies and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the  last nail into the post, he heard a tug on his overalls. He looked down and saw the
eyes of a little girl.
‘Mister,’ she said, ‘I want to buy one of your kittens.’
‘Well,’ said the farmer as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, ‘these kittens come from nice parents and cost a good deal of money.’ The girl dropped her head for a moment. Then reaching deep into her pocket, she took out a handful of coins and held it up to
the farmer.
‘I’ve got twenty-eight cents. Is it enough to have a look?’
     ‘Sure,’ said the farmer.
And with that he brought out one of the little kittens.
The little girl pressed her face against the chain link fence. Her eyes danced with delight. As the kittens made their way to the fence, the little girl noticed something else stirring inside their house. Slowly another little ball of fur appeared; this one was quite smaller.
Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little kitten began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up
“I want that one,” the little girl said, pointing to the runt.
The farmer knelt down at the girl’s side and said, “Why do you want it? He will
never be able to run and play with you like these other cats would.”
With that the little girl went back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling
up one leg of her trousers. In doing so she revealed a steel brace running down both
sides of her leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer,
she said, “Can you see sir, I don’t run well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”
