PROFICIENCY

The Proficiency Exam is an English Language Proficiency Test administered to enable students to pass the preparatory school exams of private universities. This exam generally consists of four sections: reading, listening, grammar, and writing. Since the exam is a foreign language test designed independently by universities in line with their own needs, its format may vary. Some universities (such as Boğaziçi University) also assess listening and speaking skills, while others may not include these sections. Required passing scores differ from one university to another.
Proficiency Exam Preparation Programs
The Proficiency Exam is used by universities that provide education in a foreign language to assess students’ English proficiency levels. As the exam is administered differently across universities, its format may vary; however, it generally consists of reading, listening, grammar, and writing sections.
Students enrolled in Proficiency preparation classes continue their education with a skills-based approach aimed at improving performance in this exam. The education system is practice-oriented and structured according to the exam format and strategies, and it does not include General English instruction.
In the training program, the first 60 hours consist of common core lessons, while the final 30 hours focus on university-specific preparation, tailored to the preparatory exemption exams of different universities. Candidates who wish to join the Proficiency preparation program are expected to have an intermediate or near-intermediate level of English. In addition, students who fail the placement exam at the beginning of the academic term and then fail the final exam after completing one year of preparatory education may also participate in this program.
In Proficiency exam preparation programs, different textbooks may be used for different universities, or the same textbook may be used across multiple universities, depending on exam requirements. All educational materials are provided free of charge, and students are further supported with supplementary resources in line with their progress.
At English Time, information regarding which campuses offer Proficiency exam preparation programs and their starting dates is announced regularly. Students who enroll in any of the ESP or Test Programs can benefit free of charge from English Time’s activity classes and all other social events throughout the program.
